Turquoise is a gemstone most closely associated with the Southwest. Turquoise can be found in several colors ranging from sky blue to greenish blue, and it has been used by Native American artisans for centuries. In addition to its beauty, turquoise is also prized for its properties as a healing stone. Turquoise cluster pieces are created and designed by arranging stones in a close pattern. This style of jewelry was developed by Zuni artists in the 1920s and 1930s when they began to cluster groups of hand-cut gemstones in intricate designs that resembled items such as snowflakes and flowers. Traditionally, Zuni artists used turquoise, coral and jet, although today’s artists use a wide variety of gemstones like Lapis, Spiny Oyster, and Mother of Pearl. The type of cluster is determined by both the size and the shape of the stones used. Zuni artists have designated two types of clusters: petit point and needlepoint. Needlepoint clusters have stones cut thin to resemble a needle. Petit point contains stones in square, rectangular, round or oval shapes.

Jewelry Care Instructions

Authentic Navajo handmade jewelry should always be handled carefully. Here are a few tips for keeping your beautiful Native American jewelry collection in the best condition possible:
When not wearing your fine Sterling Silver jewelry, store it in a plastic bag. Dry and wrapped in tissue paper, when not being worn or displayed.
There are many different ways to display for your jewelry collection while also keeping it safe. One idea to keeping your jewelry out for décor as well as keeping it safe is, shadowbox cases can be displayed virtually anywhere in your home while keeping the jewelry protected. You can find these at your local antique shop or store (please consider supporting a local small businesses before a large retailer). If you are feeling more crafty there are a few different DIY projects on Pinterest in regards to storing jewelry.
Clean your sterling silver with a silver polishing cloth when necessary, but it should never be subjected to silver dips, any chemical solutions or ultrasonic cleaners, as these substances can cause the stone to discolor.

No substance containing chemicals or oils (including common household cleaners, soaps, shampoos, chlorine, etc.) should come in contact with the silver or stone. It is never a good idea to wear any of your jewelry or watches in a swimming pool or while cleaning.
