Sterling Silver Mother of Pearl Earrings By Navajo Artist Jesus Espino.

Size:

  • 2” length

There's something magical about mother of pearl, the iridescent substance that forms the inner layer of the shell of some mollusks. Its uses are wide-ranging, but its aesthetic is typically boho-chic.

Mother of pearl is often used to make unique pieces of jewelry, among other things. Because of the close relationship between mother of pearl and pearls, people sometimes confuse the two, though many significant differences exist.

Where does mother of pearl come from?

The term "mother of pearl" refers to the iridescent substance that forms the inner layer (called nacre) of the shell of some mollusks. These mollusks include abalone, oysters, and mussels. Nacre is also known as "mother of pearl," while a shiny outer layer is called "pearl enamel." This material makes up pearls as well as mother of pearl.

Clean your sterling silver with a silver polishing cloth when necessary, but it should never be subjected to silver dips, any chemical solutions or ultrasonic cleaners, as these substances can cause the stone to discolor.

No substance containing chemicals or oils (including common household cleaners, soaps, shampoos, chlorine, etc.) should come in contact with the silver or stone. It is never a good idea to wear any of your jewelry or watches in a swimming pool or while cleaning.
